Our Pastors

Lead Pastor - Norm Oberlin

Pastor Norm has been the lead pastor at Mount Hope Church in Gaylord since 2002.  He has been a follower of Jesus Christ since 1981 when God delivered Norm from his "let's party" lifestyle that would most likely have killed him without a serious change.  Little did Norm know just how awesome God was until he took the plunge into Christianity.  Pastor Norm will tell you, "I never looked back.  The Lord met me at every turn and delivered me from alcohol, drugs, smoking, etc.  God even taught me how to love my wife - and that changed our marriage.  When I met Jesus, my life and that of my family changed for the good - forever!"  Norm worked for General Motors in Lansing for almost 12 years. He knows what it means to roll up your sleeves and get a little dirty.  Pastor Norm said about himself, "I am just an average guy who loves the Lord."

Today, Pastor Norm uses Scripture to teach the church about the Lord and how God can and will change our lives from the inside-out, if we let Him.  Pastor Norm says, "The greatest thing for me as a pastor is to see peoples' lives changed by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.  When you see people applying Scripture to their daily living and then witness the positive changes that follow, to me there is no better reward as a pastor.  If God can change me, He can change anybody."  To God be the Praise!

Pastor Norm is an ordained pastor and has credentials with the Assemblies of God.  He holds his Bible and Theology degree from Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL.  Pastor Norm is the father of four boys, three of whom are married.  He also has four grandchildren.

Assistant Pastor - Barb Oberlin

Pastor Barb has been the assistant pastor at Mount Hope Church in Gaylord since 2002.  She has been a follower of Jesus Christ since 1981.  Barb always knew what she wanted from life and was willing to do whatever it took to fight for that ideal. Before her conversion to Christ, Barb was a real women's libber.  She felt that anything a guy could do she could do, too.  For example, she took an auto mechanics class in college so that the mechanics couldn't take advantage of her anymore.  At the young age of 19, Barb met Norm (now Pastor Norm) and the two fell in love, were married and then began their family.  The beginning of their marriage was very rocky, but then the two gave their hearts to Jesus.  It was then that the two began to experience true love and happiness.  They have now been married some 34 years.

Today, Pastor Barb spends much of her time working one-on-one with people that are looking for positive change in their lives.  Mount Hope is blessed to have such a strong woman pastor as she is.  Pastor Barb loves helping people and she has a keen eye for what people are going through at any given moment.  The Lord continues to use her as a Biblical Advisor as well as a strong teacher of the Gospel.

Pastor Barb is an ordained minister and has her credentials with the Assemblies of God. She has her degree in Family Life Education from Spring Arbor University near Jackson, MI.  She also has many Bible and Theology credits from both Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL and Central Bible College in Springfield, MO.  As a wife, mother and grandmother, she has much experience and wisdom to share with the church.

Music Minister - Pastor Roger Welsh

Pastor Roger has been Mount Hope’s music minister since 2005.  Pastor Roger has developed a beautiful worship team at Mount Hope and he is always on the lookout for new talents in the church.  Between the worship teams and the choir, there is plenty of room for those that can either play an instrument or sing.  The church does lean toward contemporary songs, but Pastor Roger slips a hymn in now and then.
